Top Boomtowns in America – 2019 Edition

Denton named #2 Top Boomtowns in America by Smartasset.com

Boomtowns, characterized by prosperity and robust development, are often desirable places to put down roots and take out a mortgage. Economic growth provides employment opportunities and draws new residents. Some places, however, are growing faster than others. That’s why SmartAsset decided to find the cities in America where populations and jobo pportunities are rising rapidly.
In order to find the top 10 boomtowns in America, we looked at the most recently available data for 500 of the largest cities across the following seven metrics: population change, unemployment rate, change in unemployment rate, GDP growth rate, business growth, housing growth and change in household income. For details on our data sources and how we put all the information together to create the finals rankings, check out the Data and Methodology section below.

Key Findings

  • Colorado, Texas and South Carolina dominate the top 10. These states each claim three of the top 10 boomtowns nationwide. They stand out for their low unemployment rate and high five-year housing-growth rate.
  • No Midwestern or Northeastern cities in the top 50. The top 50 cities in our study are only located in Southern and Western states, according to Census regional divisions. The Northeast makes its first appearance with Boston, Massachusetts at No. 55, and the Midwest doesn’t appear until 80th place, with Carmel, Indiana.
  • Some boomtowns are outpacing the pack. Three of our top 10 boomtowns – Greeley, Colorado, New Braunfels, Texas and Round Rock, Texas – experienced population and economic growth at least double the average rates for these metrics in our study.
