Top Boomtowns in America - 2019 Edition  In December 2019 SmartAsset.com named Denton the #2 boomtown in America for 2019.  Out of 500 of the largest cities across the U.S., Denton was outranked by only one other city based on population change, unemployment rate, change in unemployment rate, GDP growth rate, business growth, housing growth and change in household income from 2014 to 2018.  For the full list and article, click here

Top 100 Best Places to Live - 20192015, & 2014  Denton’s artistic, active residents earned the city a spot on livability.com’s recent national list, Top 100 Best Places to Live. Denton ranked based on features such as social capital, education and housing.  To assemble the inaugural Top 100 list, livability.com partnered with think tank Martin Prosperity Institute and research provider Dipsos Public Affairs to analyze a combination of public and private data from small to mid-sized cities. The measured data spanned across eight pillars of livability: economics; healthcare; housing; social and civic capital; education; amenities; demographics and infrastructure. Denton ranked highest in education and social and civic capital, meaning the city has a high number of involved and educated community members.

# 2 in Human Capital and Lifestyle by Foreign Direct Investment (fDi)  Denton has moved up the rankings to 2nd in 2017/18 from 7th in 2015/16 for its Human Capital and Lifestyle by Foreign Direct Investment (fDi) Magazine.  The key data points were:  number of students; number of international business schools; labor force as percent of population; tertiary education; "brain drain;" literacy rate; secondary and tertiary enrollment rates; third-level students as percentage of population; number of physicians per 1000 people; life expectancy; and GDP per capita.

Best Small and Mid-Sized Cities for Entrepreneurs  Many smaller cities are working to foster the entrepreneurial spirit.  A new survey by small and mid-size city research site Livability and Entrepreneur Magazine ranked the 50 best small and mid-sized cities for entrepreneurship based on 15 data points.  For the full article, click here.

One of the Fastest Growing American Cities  According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the City of Denton has an estimated 2018 population of 138,553.  The City of Denton's population has grown by 25,158 or 22.2% since the 2010 Census and 58,314 or 41.9% since the 2000 Census.

50,000 + University Students  By a headcount conducted in the Fall of 2019, the University of North Texas has 39,330 students and the Texas Woman’s University Denton campus has 13,353 students.  The nearby campus of North Central Texas College in Corinth has more than 3,700 students.

Most Wind Energy in the Nation Denton Municipal Electric (DME), the municipally-owned electric utility in Denton, leads the nation by providing 40 percent wind energy to every customer. No other city in the nation provides more wind energy per person.  And DME was able to achieve this distinction without raising rates.

#6 High Tech Hotspot in the US Martin Prosperity Institute has identified an index that acknowledges the huge number of digital and tech jobs in more traditional industries like film, news, publishing, and telecommunications. The index measures the number of new jobs in this sector created between 2007 and 2012. This list goes beyond the usual suspects. It also reflects the rise of tech in college towns. This increase represents the shift of high-tech industry and jobs from just a few suburban nerdistans — like Silicon Valley and the Boston suburbs — to more urban locations and college towns.

#1 Small Town in the US Rand McNally and USA Today ranked Denton number one on the 2012 Top Ten Best Small Towns in America list.

Top 10 US City for Data Security  A recent report lists Denton among the 10 best data security cities in the U.S. Cities were chosen based on their "robust bandwidth, telecommunications, power infrastructures, and favorable operating cost structures and secure location insulated from natural disasters," the study says. The study, "Banking & Financial Services: A Comparative Cost Analysis for Information Assurance Operations," by New Jersey based The Boyd Co., compares the nation's largest regional centers and selected the best cities that met certain criteria for housing highly secure, low risk and cost effective data security operations for the banking and financial services industry.
